this 4-track ep combines ambient and techno elements to create immersive landscapes, which later on transform into the techno grooves. the concept of this release, �unknown frequency�, defines the limited nature of human perception, which is unable to experience the full universe of the sound.

alter is the new album from belgium-based double bass player and electronic producer otto lindholm. divided into four colour-inspired, long-form movements, alter takes off from lindholms previous work a self-titled album released in 2015 on icarus records, and pushes the already abundant palette of sounds even further. this new work is more brooding and hypnotic. a deep, resonating bass is present - hinting at the likes of greek, chamber-doom merchants mohammad but perhaps with more attention placed upon textures and melody. the record moves at a funereal pace and opener fauve hits abyssal depths from the outset. a bowed melody is coaxed through the throbbing bass with dissonant harmonics drawing you in and holding you close. the ghostly beginnings of alyscamps create an overwhelmingly tense atmosphere where acoustic and electronic elements collide and evolve into a heaving, ceremonious drone. shafts of light emerge through the fog but the tone remains a haunted one. closer, heliotrope, strikes a more hopeful note. a lighter, more open feel emerges - bringing to mind early work of the rachels or perhaps deaf center.

the album is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. written and performed by peter wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi award winning, temporary norwegian writer karl ove knausgard and deal with very personal subjects from his own life. �the previous releases were about the �lonely� feelings, the feelings that only existed in me, the feelings i wanted to set free for a long time. the new album is about my life as it is right now, about all the thoughts, expectations, worries and the happiness that comes with a new life as a family. this is a very personal album, but i also hope to express something very ordinary and something that most people can relate to.- also musically the album is a big step forward for wangel, the melodies are still subtle, but offer more nuances and colors.

up first is smooth, an infectious groove with lively synths scurrying about and bringing lots of dynamism to the drums. the percussion is crisp and the whole thing feels spaced out and futuristic. it�s busy and brimming with energy and will get any floor on its toes. sharp is a darker number with more menace in the drums. they are rubbery and supple and run through with edgy little synth lines. the track grows wilder as it unfolds and will really work dance floors into a lather.
once again the master joss shows just why he is such a tastemaker in the underground dance scene.

amsterdam based artist nthng continues to have a busy year. following up an album on lobster theremin and ep on transatlantic, he now lands on delsin with three tracks that touch on driving dub-techno and dreamy ambient. oralage opens with upbeat drum programming and gliding hits that make for a smooth flowing groove. distant pads add some spacey atmospheres and the production is effortlessly warm and driving. a souls search takes time out to drift in the cosmos, with waves of muted euphoria washing over you as you sink into clouds of ambient bliss. lastly, turn to gaia is a dubbed out techno roller, with long legged drums looping down low, reverberating chords adding weight and distant bell sounds charting the whole thing in a harmonic glow. it rounds out a super smooth and seductive ep.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin� records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called �fairy godmother of house� abigail adams, movin�s first output was �i�ve got the music� by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up �jersey jams� that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin� records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin� records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve �lucky� benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line �i love this place�. the �place of worship� mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

shore is a vibraphonist and composer based in brooklyn. eamon harkin and justin carter from mister saturday night met him through nyc music institution, nublu, where he worked with the legendary jazz maestro butch morris and sex mob and tom waits drummer kenny wollesen. at the very first planetarium listening session, where eamon and justin blend records into live performances for people sprawled on the floor of a loft for six hours, one of justin s friends leaned over to him and asked, -what is this record? it s amazing.- it wasn t a record. it was shore, playing a hundred times in the corner of the room.

tenderness - a short-lived disco project helmed by james purdie and skip mahoney only released one 45 and one 12� single during their brief existence. known for their work with chuck brown & the soul searchers & frank hooker & positive people and many more, this duo were undoubtedly a highly talented producer, songwriter and keyboardist combination. originally released on rca in 1978 keep on trying was an underground club hit. the record still packs an immense punch today, it�s a mixture of tough streetwise drums and percussion and swooping dramatic strings and brass will surely hit the spot for disco aficionados. the kind of record you can imagine causing all out pandemonium at the garage while the scents of amyl and sweat fill your nostrils. the kind of record that would make everyone on the raised stages and podiums at the powerhouse whoop and holler in collective joy as frankie stylishly segues it into a punishing percussion break-down. yep. it�s that kind of disco record, so rare and so coveted that even the infamous dj harvey put it over his knee and gave it a good editing way back when. there�s been a shedload of poor imitations knocking around, dodgy euro bootlegs etc, but this 2017 repress is from the master tapes (yes, we can prove it) and is fully, 100% legit in every way. keep on trying - now available again, released in conjunction with rca. back on the streets. same as it ever was! essential disco heat here, buy on sight!
